Bird watching

Varanger is a mecca for birdwatchers with a rich varied birdlife, some of them quite rare. Each year, large numbers of birds make the Varanger fiord and the Arctic Ocean their home for a period. They nest along the coast and in the spring and summer the sound of birds in the sky can be heard all over Varanger. According to local ornithologists, the distance between various different biotopes in the area makes Varanger a particularly interesting region for birdwatchers. Birds of all types, from mountainbirds to seabirds can be seen within the same area.

Hiking

Therer are a lot of nice hikes that you can do from Lovisenborg. One of our favourites is to walk to the outermost place on Veidneset to the lighthouse. Here you have a wonderful view of the Barents sea. Another favourite is to walk the road up to the Waterworks in Kongsfjord where you have nice view of the village. In the Manager´s residence there is a hiking book with lots of suggestions.

Sea kayaking

Kongsfjord is a haven for sea kayakers who are beyond the beginners stage. Great places for kyaking inside the Kongsfjord Straumen, around Veidnes or at the eastern side of Kongsfjord. Paddling the tidalrace in the Kongsfjordstraumen or surfing at the beach in Straumfjorden.

Ski Kiting

If you are a specialist og a beginner, the Varanger peninsula has a reputation as one of the greates ski-kiting destinations in Europe. This is thanks to the annual longdistance race from Berlevåg to Vardø, Varanger Arctic Kite Enduro.

Sportsfishing

If you like to fish you have several options whether you are seeking a quiet mountain lake with trout and char, or you would go for the salmon in the Kongsfjord river. You can also take a little walk on the pier and fish for small pollock.;
